ATHENS THROWING GROUP

Coach Don Babbitt is the guiding force for this amazing group of Olympic hopefuls that make Athens their training home as they prepare to compete around the world. Through his technical expertise and coaching guidance, he has collected what is arguably the finest group of throwers in the country – all with their eyes on the prize at the Olympic Games in Beijing.

Coach Babbitt is in his 10th year as assistant track and field coach at the University of Georgia. Under Babbitt’s guidance, Georgia throwers have reached a high level of success including six NCAA titles, 40 All-American certificates and 29 SEC titles. In addition, current Georgia junior Jennifer Dahlgren recently set the SEC, NCAA and South American records in the hammer throw with a mark of 71.79m (235-6). His success has also been dramatic on the international scene. Eight of his athletes competed at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, including shot put silver medalist Adam Nelson. He also coached former Georgia thrower Reese Hoffa to the gold medal in the Indoor World Championships this past March. Reese recorded the third longest throw in the history of the sport and the longest throw in 17 years!

A native of California, Coach Babbitt has gained a reputation as one of the top coaches in his area of expertise, having been a featured speaker at the several International Track and Field Coaches Association meetings and at the U.S. Elite Throws Camp at the Olympic Training Center. In 2003, he was named National Assistant Coach of the year in the throws category by the U.S. Track and Field Association.

ESTIMATED EXPENSES

Training for any sport is an extremely intense as well as costly proposition. Along with the normal living expenses, you have to bear the expenses of training, traveling and everything associated with your sport. The following is an estimated breakdown of the expenses associated with training for the Olympics.

Working as a personal trainer, Rhuben’s annual income is about $18,000.00 per year. His total yearly expenditures amount to about $48,000.00 per year, a difference of $30,000 per year. For the total of 4 years training the total amount comes to approximately, $192,000.00. The following is a detailed list of the expenditures.

Without sponsors, these costs are borne by the athlete and his family. Rhuben’s father passed away his senior year of high school, so his sole support is his mother, Cherie a self employed Events Planner. Consequently, we are looking for sponsors that can help with these expenses to support an Olympic hopeful fulfill his dream.
